Gary Speed leaves us with so many happy memories but his most glittering legacy of all is how he helped lay the foundation for the most exciting era of Welsh football in years.

That is why his death on Sunday has stunned so many of us who knew him and worked with him, and why his contribution will live on in those young players who loved playing in his sides.

End of the Road for The Williams Sisters

by admin on June 28, 2011

in Tennis

Marion Bartoli emphatically ended Serena Williams’ reign at Wimbledon with a 6-3 7-6 (8-6) triumph over the defending champion.

Looking to take home the women’s title for a third straight year,Williams was well below-par as she tumbled out in straight sets.

Having had less than three weeks of action during the year due to injury and serious illness, it was always a big ask for the American to retain her crown.

However few expected her to fall to Bartoli, who will now face German Sabine Lisicki for a place in the semi-finals, on Court One on the second Monday of this year’s Championship.

Andre Villas-Boas became the seventh manager of the Roman Abramovich era at Chelsea on Wednesday as the 33-year-old, who resigned from Porto on Tuesday, agreed to a three-year contract at the west London club.

Villas-Boas, who led Porto to a domestic double as well as winning the Europa League last season, replaces Carlo Ancelotti, who was sacked in May after failing to win a trophy in his second season having won the Premier League and FA Cup in his first.

Villas-Boas, who becomes the youngest manager in the Premier League, moves to London after Chelsea paid 13.3 million pounds to trigger an escape clause in his contract.

Barcelone’s Stance on Fabregas Move

by admin on June 21, 2011

in Football

Barcelona have reiterated their stance over Cesc Fabregas‘ valuation, but they have added new momentum to a possible summer move by publicly claiming the Arsenal skipper is trying to engineer a transfer to Camp Nou.

Fabregas was the subject of a big-money approach by the Catalans last summer, but Arsenal successfully fended off any advances, despite the midfielder making it clear he would be interested in a return to his former club.

Ronaldo left Manchester United for Real in 2009, when City were rumoured to be interested, and it appears he is still on the radar in the blue half of Manchester.

Ronaldo has delivered excellent performances for Real, but has been put in the shade in Spain and Europe by the Barcelona side of Lionel Messi, Xavi and co.

It has been claimed mega-rich City were readying a package to lure Ronaldo away from the Bernabeu but he has no intention of jumping ship.

“I’m not going to City,” Ronaldo told the Cadena COPE radio station. “I give you my word I’m not going. Money is not the most important thing.

“If it was for money I could have double what I have. If it was for money I would leave.

“The most important thing is the behaviour of the people and they treat me tremendously here and I am very happy in Madrid.”

Ronaldo is prepared to pledge his long-term future to Real by saying: “I would sign for 10 years. For Madrid, until the end of my career.”

Ronaldo believes his side can go on to win the Champions League for the first time since 2002.

in Football

Essien has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge in recent weeks, with a move to the Bernabeu said to be on the cards. But Piveteau insists that his client is happy at the Premier League club.

Piveteau was quoted as saying in the Sun: “He regularly has Jose Mourinho on the phone because they know each other well and have got on with each other since Jose was in charge of Chelsea.

“But Real Madrid has never really appealed to him. Michael will stay at Chelsea, where he has another four years left on his contract.

Jose Mourinho to drop Iker Casillas

by admin on March 11, 2011

in Football

Mourinho used his pre-match press conference on Friday morning to once again hit out at the fixture schedule he believes favours Pep Guardiola’s side, and claimed he could omit Spain captain Casillas against Atletico Madrid a week later to aid Barca’s cause.

“Iker won’t be with us because he won’t be in the squad against Atletico [next weekend],” he said. “If they want to end the league before time, I might as well make it easy for them.”

Ronaldo and Carvalho have been left out of Mourinho’s squad, the former recovering from injury and the latter rested with Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 second leg against Lyon in mind. Lassana Diarra returns after suspension, though, while Alvaro Arbeloa, Sami Khedira and Ezequiel Garay are back from injuries.

Mourinho reiterated his unhappiness with the fixture schedule, which he claims has worked in Barca’s favour.

“We are in a situation where as soon as we drop a point we lose the championship, although not mathematically so,” he said. “I am not stupid and I know this.

“There is a team that played in the Champions League on Tuesday and have no game in the league until the following Sunday [Barca this week], while another one is forced to play in Europe on Wednesday and then Saturday in the league [Madrid next week].
